Zhuo Yue from Wasu: Integration and innovation to explore the possibilities of Virtual Reality

The 2016 Global VR Convention was held in Shenzhen, south China¡¯s Guangdong Province, on May 27. Zhuo Yue, assistant to chairman of Wasu Media, delivered a speech on integration and innovation to explore the possibilities of Virtual Reality.

Zhuo Yue talked about the conditions, applications and current difficulties for VR and shared details about Wasu¡¯s VR+ model, and VR+DVB.

Thanks to the decline in hardware prices, the emergence of more applications and rising sales, VR is booming. The market size of VR in China in 2015 is estimated at 1.54 billion yuan (US$23.03 million), and this year it is expected to soar to 5.66 billion yuan, with the figure likely reaching 55 billion yuan in 2020, according to iResearch.com. VR will be a mainstream computing platform after computers and mobile phones, and 40% of entertainment time will be spent on VR in the future, a report by Ali Research suggests.

Zhuo Yue forecast that gaming, live telecast and video entertainment will be the top 3 VR areas, followed by news, education, healthcare, culture and military applications, respectively. As of now the VR applications are not cash cows and have fewer choices. The profitability of content is small amid limited good content. There are bottlenecks in hardware technology and it is not easy or convenient to put on hardware due to weight and design. As yet not a single VR equipment has been successful as a business model. In addition, the data for VR content is huge, which is a new challenge for real time transmission.

Wasu has come up with three strategies to overcome difficulties for VR in application, content and development using big data.

                First, enrich content continuously

Wasu has the largest 4K movie and TV content in China. It has deep cooperation with six Hollywood movie companies and exclusive ties with Sony on 4K content. It boasts more than 300 3D movies, and 2,000 panorama video resources. And it has contact with a VR documentary producer from the United States and will bring Discovery VR resources to China.

                Second, innovate the VR+ model

With more than 30 million digital TV subscribers, 30 million mobile phone users, and 80 million internet TV customers, Wasu has a unique channel advantage.

Wasu has the largest scale of 3G mobile phone TV users thanks to its collaboration with China¡¯s three major operators. The self-developed VR App is about to make its debut in the market, which will provide 3D and panorama live telecast service. The video and audio system matches 100 percent with the hardware, providing a perfect VR experience.

In addition to Zhejiang Province, Wasu has also developed its market in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Guizhou and Hunan provinces where it has 30 million digital TV users. As a leading cable network operator with the biggest scale in China, Wasu explores the unlimited possibilities in the integration of VR with cable network. And it has the upper hand due to its advantages in terms of stability, high speed, users and payment.

Stability: On the one hand cable TV users have higher reliability on channel and higher loyalty; on the other, transmission on cable network is very stable, providing quality experience for VR users.

High speed: VR experience places high demand on code stream. Cable network has the advantage of providing stable images on demand without bandwidth limit.

Users: Wasu has 30 million cable TV terminals covering all ages.

Payment: Wasu has a mature business model and family clients with strong consumption abilities. Users have formed a habit for pay-per-view and have signed long-term contracts with Wasu.

Third, Wasu invests in terminal areas in many ways

Wasu has close contact with VR hardware manufacturers through cooperation, incubation and investing to raise terminal product performance and push forward the standardization of VR terminal products.

In the end, Zhuo Yue summarized: Wasu will put more investment and resources in VR content, channel and terminal development; it will also cooperate with VR hardware manufacturers to share its advantage on content and channel; and Wasu will join hands with VR industry players to make virtual reality a reality.
